So, a weirdo tried to scam me! Yep, you read that correctly. As I was sitting at work the other day minding my own business, I get a voicemail supposedly from the IRS. Upon listening to it I’m told that I must respond right away to a legal issue. Now normally I would have totally ignored this, but unfortunately last year some of my personal information was stolen. With this at the forefront of my mind, I called the number back, and right away could tell something was up.
The Set up
My call was answered right away by an Officer Alan Williams, and I could tell by the amount of background noise that he was in busy call center. Mr. Williams (yeah right!) then proceeded to tell me that I owed the government a huge amount of money from over five years ago. While trying to figure out what he was talking about, I began to realize that this was definitely scam. Firstly, the man’s language skills were beyond terrible, and everyone I’ve ever spoken to at the IRS could actually speak English. Secondly, this man was going under the assumption that I still live in New York (probably because of my phone area code), and called me by the wrong surname. Thirdly, the more I pushed back on him to tell me what the call was about, the more he wanted me to tell him my personal information. As I kept pushing back, and asked for his supervisor (Officer Andrew Hall), the fake IRS officer hung up on me. How rude!
The IRS will never call your phone, and ask you to pay them anything! They will also not call to tell you that law enforcement is on its way to get you. The process of the IRS when they’ve determined an individual owes the money can be found in detail on IRS.gov. I strongly suggest you take a look at this page, and pass it on to anyone you think might be vulnerable to this type of scam.
Since this ridiculous call, I’ve been contacted on other occasions by other scam artists, and if you search for the “IRS scam” on YouTube, you can see exactly what I went through. Call me naïve, but I really can’t understand why the cartels or organizations running these schemes think it’s ok to go after other people’s money. I work very hard for everything I have, and it truly galls me to know this kind of thing is going on. Know anyone that’s been contacted by these scumbags? If you have, then I’d love to hear about it!
